I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and weekend. The long weekend is nearly over, and it’ll be back to work tomorrow.
My weekend started here
at the airport. I got there pretty early, remembering that Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year. I got there to find the security line empty. Absolutely empty. I dutifully removed my shoes, placed my little zip-top bag with my liquids and gels in the plastic tub, along with my handbag. I obediently removed my laptop from my bag and put it in a different plastic tub. I stood on the other side of the xray machine and waited for my stuff to come out. And waited. The person looking at the fluoro screen cocked her head and called somebody over. They pointed, discussed, called somebody else over. They looked, pointed, and then one of them called for a supervisor. I wanted to help–I AM an xray tech after all. Finally, my laptop, shoes and handbag came out, but they took my other bag to inspect. I just knew it was the deodorant. Maybe it WASN’T invisible after all. I asked the lady, who had so unceremoniously rummaged through my things, if she could tell me what caused the problem because I wanted to avoid it in the future. She said it was “mostly electronic stuff.” I asked what she meant because I took my computer out and my camera was in my purse. She said “maybe it was the cords” and suggested that next time I remove power cords (I had one for my computer and one for my phone) and batteries (extras for my camera) and send those through separatedly. Whew, NOT the deodorant then!
Sweet Kate took the bus to the airport to meet me and we got our rental car and started the day. First we went to her apartment so she could pack her bag for our extended slumber party. This is her building. It is
very tall, and a bit uninteresting. Disclaimer: my policy on full-disclosure does not apply to images of Kate’s room, apartment, or any space(including hotel room) that she inhabits for more than 5 minutes. Actually, I think her apartment looked a little better than I expected.
Then we decided that we were hungry and we would go find some place to eat some lunch. So, we headed out to Ala Moana shopping center because surely there would be a restaurant open there even though the mall was closed for the most part. Not so much. There was nothing open.
We checked into our hotel and decided to wander the streets to find something open. Kate knew that the Discovery Bay Starbucks was open, and it was only a block away. Not even McDonalds there was open. So we resigned ourselves to a Starbucks sandwich until supper. Just for kicks we decided to walk around the little Discover Bay center and found the BEST THING EVER: Bombay Indian restaurant was open. I don’t think there’s much we like more than Indian food, so we had some. It was yummy. And they had pretty lamps:
Kate had reservations for dinner at Elua. And it was incredible. They actually had a fancied-up prix-fixe turkey meal, which sounded really good, but neither of us got it. We chose our meals very deliberately and carefully, had a cocktail, and two-ounce pours of the suggested wines with each course. It was fancy. And delicious. And elegant. And just nice. Then, instead of dessert, we decided to get the cheese tray, again with suggested wine. We were quite happy and satisfied at the end of the evening.
Friday, we went to Whole Foods, had lunch at Town in Kaimuki, hung out, checked out a few sales, I bought shoes, and Kate went to work. I chilled in the hotel room, watched Monk, and when Kate was pau we had some snackage and seared ahi from Outback across the street.
Saturday we went to Waikiki, but didn’t have a plan. The cold and rain didn’t help. We had lunch at P.F. Chang’s, where Kate ate a mushroom that looked scary
to me. My food was blessedly free of mushrooms that appeared to have legs.
Anyway, I think we both had a great time. It was great to hang out together. She proved to be a great navigator for someone who has no car.
The end of the semester is only a few weeks away and she’ll be coming home, so I don’t have an excuse to go back anytime soon.
But I’m already thinking about my next meal at Elua.
Go forth and do good things and be well.

I make that same ridiculous face in every picture. Someone should smack it off me.
